Many people feel that volunteering is an important step in their recovery. By helping others – you help yourself. Volunteering builds confidence, and improves quality of life by helping to create purpose and meaning. It helps build experience which can be valuable on your resume or if you want to go back to school. Volunteering as a ‘peer’ is also helpful for overcoming self stigma. By seeing the value of your experience, and sharing what you have learned with others, many people are able able to re-frame their mental health issues more positively. Change your focus from “I am not able” to “I can.”
